Workshop Tools

Providing enough tools for teams for technical workshops is always a challenge. There are several ways to approach this:

  1. Purchase tools for the tool kits for the classes. This can be expensive but you can look on it as a long term investment since you will be able to use them over and over again. Do not scrimp by buying cheap tools. The teams need good tools to work with and cheaper tools may break and end up costing you more in the long run.
  2. Publish a list of tools that teams must bring to participate in the workshop.
  3. Along with the #2 option you could give teams the option of paying for a toolkit that you have put together but that they take with them at the end of the workshop. This does create some planning issues as you have to have time to assemble the tool kits.

Places you might shop

  • Northern Tools often has tools that would work at technical workshops at very reasonable prices.
  • Harbor Freight Tools often runs sales on tools. We have purchased diagonal cutters and needle nose pliers for our local workshops. In December of 2007 their Voltage Ohm meters were on sale for $4 ($10 is the cheapest we have seen.)
